Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs) are a type of nanomaterial with a hierarchical bimodal pore structure. Compared with the conventionally ordered mesoporous silica of the same pore size reported previously, DMSNs exhibit higher pore permeability, larger pore volume, and better intracrystalline surface accessibility due to their three-dimensional, centrally radiating dendritic structure. In addition, DMSNs integrate central radial pores and uniform mesopores within a single nanoparticle: the uniform mesopores can encapsulate small-molecule drugs, while the central radial pores are capable of loading macromolecular proteins and genes. Therefore, DMSNs with a hierarchical bimodal pore structure are regarded as promising nanocarriers for the co-delivery of drugs.
